Supervision

STATEMENT OF SUPERVISION PHILOSOPHY

The relationship between the supervisor and supervisee is an important one; it is necessary that we have a supportive relationship and a strong working alliance which includes agreeing on goals and tasks.  We must be able to be adaptable and flexible, be open to self-evaluation and evaluation by others, resolve conflicts, and trust each other so we can disclose safely.  Characteristics of a good therapist and a good supervisor include empathy, respect, genuineness, concreteness, self knowledge, tolerance, and superior ability.

I believe that supervision happens at many levels and in many areas:  modeling, feedback, opportunities to experience and explore transference and counter transference, as well as supporting and challenging a supervisee.

When possible I use a Socratic method of supervision, where I ask questions to challenge the supervisees’ thinking and to help them gain insight, as well as articulate their beliefs and theories.  As needed, though, I am direct and clear about directions that I expect to be followed.  Ethics is a good example of an area where thoughtful discussion has its place, but it is imperative to know and follow Oregon Administrative Rules or other rules of conduct.

Previous Supervisees Say:

“During my clinical internship, I felt fortunate to have Debbie for my clinical supervisor.  Debbie has high standards, and I became a better counselor.  Debbie has a great understanding of professional ethics and its relation to the day to day work of a counselor.  After working with Debbie, I feel that I could walk into any mental health agency and be confident.  I felt her respect and commitment to my reaching a level of professionalism required of a counselor.  I felt supported by her in developing my process of case conceptualization.  I have grown tremendously in our work together.”  Maureen

“As a supervisor Debbie established right up front personal trust, respect, and confidence in me as an intern.  Her supervision empowered me to feel comfortable opening up about concerns both with clients as well as with my own personal abilities as a therapist.  Debbie provided helpful feedback and was open-minded and supportive about using new theories and treatments that were empirically based.”  Kris

“As a supervisor Debbie was thorough and validating.  She got me to expand my case conceptualizations, picking up on areas that I might not be thinking about.  I always looked forward to our sessions, due to her warmth and personalized approach.”  Natalie

“Debbie has a great deal of experience as a therapist as well as a supervisor.  She made my job a better experience, because of her levity and depth of caring.”  Jeanne
